Dare to be different: Dokkan Afkar’s hunger to start something unique

Michael Arrington the founder of TechCrunch had quoted: “The best startups generally come from somebody needing to scratch an itch.” It is beautiful how one can start from the bottom and fill out someone’s life with experiences that should be remembered. Each startup, business leaves an impact on our lives and gives us experiences to share. Dokkan Afkar: an online shopping website for gadgets and gizmos has a vision and they have made sure they make it through. Here’s their story:

About the company

Dokkan Afkar is an online shopping platform where customers can buy gizmos and gadgets. Being a Saudi-based startup, it was started in Jeddah. But the customers residing all over Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and UAE can enjoy the website. The company was started by a bunch of eager and excited people who love innovative ideas, designs, and creations. The company was founded on April 8th, 2013.

The founders

Dokkan Afkar was started by two beautiful people who wanted their company to stand out: Amar Waganah and Mohamad Nasrallah. The company has become one of the most successful companies in Saudi Arabia. Amar Waganah initially was working in advertising. As days passed by, he realized that he wanted to do something of his own, something unique. In the need to create something different and something creative to offer, Amar with his former colleague Mohamad started their own startup: Dokkan Afkar in the year 2013. Hard days passed by and now the company nearly generates $3 Million every year.

The idea behind the startup

The hunger for doing something different and giving people more than what they deserve drove these two guys to build Dokkan Afkar. The website makes a way for the local artists and entrepreneurs to showcase their local designs and products to the customers. It is hard to approach the big companies, therefore to make a way for the small artists the company made it easier to get approached. The website presents a bunch of quirky, local, and unique products such as gizmos and gadgets. The guys have been producing what they love for the people who they love.

“The stress that entrepreneurs go through in their journey is something that is so hard, it affects their health, their relationships with family or friends. I have seen a lot of people isolating themselves with their projects. That’s the kind of sacrifice you need to make in the beginning. But it gets better.” was said by one of the founders.

Funding, Recent News & Investors

Dokkan Afkar’s funding costs are around $7.6 million. The company ranks 37th among The Middle East’s 50 Most-Funded Startups. The investors of the company are BIAC, Venture Souq, Riyad TAQNIA Fund, and SVC. The company had raised $5.6 million in late 2019.

“E-commerce is the future, it’s going to boom in this region and everywhere across the world, and all we need for the boom in infrastructure and that is happening right now – payment gateways are happening, logistics are coming into the market, it’s getting better and better.” Amar Waganah quoted.

If you just work on stuff that you like and you’re passionate about, you don’t have to have a master plan with how things will play out.
